Billy in the Lowground

Meet Billy in the Lowground from Radstock. They play an eclectic mix of Celtic, rock and alternative country, and got their name from an American bluegrass tune.


Who are Billy in the Lowground?

Chris Hibberd on vocals and guitar; Ruth Behan on fiddle; Nick Woods on drums; Ian Simpson on bass; and Nigel Lloyd on mandolin and guitar

Where in Somerset are you from?

Radstock

When did you form?

The current line-up has been together since September 2005.

How did you get together?

Chris and Ruth were looking for musicians to reform their previous band, and placed ads in Trade It. The rest of us auditioned and got the job (not very exciting is it?).

How would you describe your music?

An eclectic mix of Celtic, rock and alternative country.

How did the band gets its name?

It's from an American bluegrass tune.

Who are your musical influences?

Everything from old-time string bands (eg The Skillet Lickers) through to contemporary roots artists such as The Waterboys and Levellers, as well as blues, country and heavy rock.

Too many influences to list really.

What is your most memorable gig so far?

Larmer Tree Festival last year.

Where would you most like to play?

Cambridge and Trowbridge Festivals.
