2008 Shropshire Youth Games

Shropshire Youth Games

Hundreds of local young people converged on RAF Cosford on 28 June for the 10th, annual Shropshire Youth Games.

The Shropshire Youth Games have been hailed a success as around 600 young people from around the county took part in sports as varied as hockey, tennis, tag rugby, swimming and cheerleading. South Shropshire won the overall title, while Bridgnorth picked up the William Penny Brookes Fair Play award.

Teams of 8-18-year-olds from Bridgnorth, North Shropshire, Shrewsbury & Atcham, South Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin competed against each other at the 10th annual games hosted at RAF Cosford.

Sports Development Officers worked with schools in each area to put together the teams. Shropshire County Council's Ann Johnson summed up the event: "They're thoroughly enjoying themselves. If you take a look at the competitions, the competitiveness is fantastic and the spirit everything is being played in is wonderful."

First launched in 1998, the focus of the event has been on encouraging Shropshire young people to enjoy sports and bond through teamwork. Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin was also on-hand at the 2008 games to promote sport as part of everyday life.
