An Experiment in Social TV for Automating Content Sharing via Social Networks

White Paper WHP 243

Published: 1 March 2013

Abstract

This paper presents an overview of prototypes built in order to enable users to share content across a social network such as Twitter in an automated fashion. Currently, it is a laborious process to manually extract the information needed to refer to a programme being viewed on a connected TV unambiguously in order to construct a short tweet or post on a mobile device. This process is made more complex if the user wants to refer to a specific part of the programme. Our prototypes use the Universal Control API to extract information about what programme a user is watching on their connected television. The extracted information is then used to automatically 'pullβ€˜ programme-relevant content to a companion device such as a mobile phone, tablet or laptop. The user can then choose to share the online content on social networks. Conversely, the user can look-up a programme online and then 'pushβ€˜ relevant information to the connected television in order to tune it to the right channel.
