Abstract

In order to keep the level of the sound signal leaving a broadcasting studio within the limits that can be satisfactorily transmitted it is necessary from time to time to vary the gain of amplifier chain following the microphone. This adjustment is normally carried out by a skilled operator and although various attempts have been made to devise an automatic gain-control system to perform the task, none has been entirely satisfactory.

The monograph surveys the principal obstacles to be overcome in producing an acceptable automatic device to replace a human control operator. Reference is made to recent work carried out on the subject in the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and elsewhere and some suggestions for future developments are put forward.
