Call You & Yours: Children's TV
16/02/2010
IsΜύthe future of children's TV under threat?

The House of Lords has warned that not enough children's television is being made in the UK. Spending on children's programmes has fallen by 48%since 2003 and original British programming has dropped from 1900 hours a year to just 900.

With cable, satellite and digital terrestrial channels there's more programming aimed at young people than ever before - does it matter to you if it's British or not? Once ITV stopped making original children's TV it left just the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ commissioning new programmes in the UK. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ recently announced it would spend a further Β£25million in the next three years, on top of around Β£120million annual budget. Is that enough?

Do you worry about the influence American programmes in particular have on children? If you're a young person what do you think? Is Even Stevens just as relevant to your life as Tracy Beaker?

The House of Lords Communications Committee has suggested tax breaks for companies that make children's programmes, like those given to those making feature films. What would you do?
