"I'm the Last of the Red Hot Mammas"

This was how the American Variety star Sophie Tucker billed herself during her long career, spanning most of the twentieth century. She became a great favourite on both sides of the Atlantic with her Junoesque figure clad in glamorous outfits and a repertoire of songs that ranged from the sentimental to the funny, and frankly sexy.

But the road to stardom was not an easy one for the wannabe star, who was known as ‘the fat girl’ when she started out in her teens. Judi Herman has been looking at her career and her appeal with Maggie Gale, Professor of Drama at Manchester University and performer Sue Kelvin, who is currently starring in a show based on her life.

"Sophie Tucker’s One Night Stand" continues in LondonÌýat the New End Theatre, Hampstead until 15 January,Ìýand will be transferring to the King’s Head, IslingtonÌýon 12 March.
