champion apprentice jockey

Many little girls with a love of horses dream of becoming a champion jockey like Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet.

But for 23-year-old Dubliner, Cathy Gannon, hopes of becoming a jockey were as remote as her north Dublin housing estate is from the gallops of Co. Kildare. In spite of this she has just become the first female jockey to win the Irish Apprentice Jockey Championship.

Kay Sheehy spent a day with Cathy the week before she won the Championship.
