tracing the herb'sÌýorigins

In the Knight's Tale, Chaucer mentions how medieval gentlemen believed drinking an infusion of sage had medicinal benefits..."And sage, they drank, to keep their limbs from haemorrhage", he wrote.

It's also said to be a mental stimulant - and research is being done now on its possible effect on Alzheimer's disease.

In the latest of our series on herbs, Claudia Hammond met Miranda Seymour, the author of A Brief History of Thyme, who told her about the origins of the herb.

Miranda Seymour's A Brief History of Thyme and Other Herbs, Published 10 Oct 2002 by John Murray, ISBN: 0719563275
