Pauline Kael was one of America's most influential film critics - her ascerbic West Coast wit challenged the traditional conventions of New York film criticism and often provoked controversy amongst film fans and studio bosses alike.
Kael didn't begin film reviewing until her forties and she became the resident critic at the New Yorker magazine. She died in 2001 at the age of 82.
Sarah Woolman spoke to the film critic Lesley Felperin and Pauline Kael's friend and fellow film reviewer David Edelstein about her life and work.
