From the cloth for our clothes to linen for our beds and kitchens and hangings for our walls, weaving has been integral to human life for thousands of years.
But textile is no longer an area in which British designers are at the fore and that's something that Ann Sutton, a weaver who is herself internationally acclaimed for her work, wants to change. She's set up a Foundation in her name to give an elite group of three weavers the equipment to be creative ? and the business skills to succeed in an increasingly commercial world.
Lizz Pearson went to Arundel in Sussex to see the Foundation, and the unusual uses Ann Sutton and her fellows are finding for cloth.
