Ìý Women In Orchestras Tuesday 28 January 2003 Ìý
The Vienna Philharmonic's famous New Year's Day concert set tongues wagging this year with the appearance of a female viola player - Ursula Plaichinger.

The press reported that the orchestra had finally appointed its first female musician, 6 years after it was forced to drop its all male rule. In fact Plaichinger isn't a member of the orchestra but she is the only woman to have passed their audition process.
David Gallagher has covered the Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Day concert for the Â鶹ԼÅÄ for the past 10 years and reports to us on the present situation there with regards to women musicians.
Maggie Cotton, retired percussionist with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and Rhian Samuel, Professor of Music, City University, London, join Jenni to discuss whether sexism in orchestras is a problem in Britain too.
