The sounds most commonly associated with Peru are those produce by pan pipes played by Native Indian musicians.
But there's also a significant black population in the country. They were brought to South America as slaves by the Spanish Conquistadors and their cultural heritage was hardly known, even in Peru.
Susana Baca has spent her lifetime uncovering her musical roots. Her recordings have taken Afro-Peruvian music around the world. She's just brought out a new CD, Espiritu Vivo, and she's in London at the moment with her band. Espiritu Vivo, Label: Luaka Bop, Catalogue No: LBCD38
