Lady Jane Grey and Her Sisters 04ÌýFeb 2009
Controversial miniature by Lavina Teerlinc, identified by David Starkey as Lady Jane Grey.
The truth about the ‘Nine Day Queen’.

The story of Lady Jane Grey has been repeated often: an innocent teen who was Queen for nine days and then cruelly executed at the orders of Bloody Mary. However, in her new book, Leanda de Lisle sheds new light on Lady Jane’s quick ascension to the throne and her tragic death. She suggests that Lady Jane was not simply a naïve young girl but an intelligent, religious ideologue who saw herself as a ‘Protestant Joan of Arc’. Leanda also tells Jenni about the turbulentÌýlives of Lady Jane’s sisters. Katherine was judged as a threat to Queen Elizabeth and was sent to the tower to die in captivity. The youngest sister, Mary, was disgraced for marrying without the approval of the Queen and died in modest surroundings.Ìý
