Defying death threats to fight for women’s rights

Malalai Joya lives in constant fear of assassination and has to move repeatedly from safehouse to safehouse, but despite the threat to her life the young Afghan MP continues to attack her country’s government. It is, she says, little more than a mafia run by criminals and warlords intent on using Islamic law to erode the rights of women. Earlier this week she was given the Anna Politkovskaya Award to honour her human rights work. The prize is given in memory of the Russian journalist murdered two years ago after exposing the brutal treatment of civilians in Chechnya. Malalai Joya joins Sheila to discuss the plight of women in Afghanistan
