During August Material World is broadcasting three programmes made in conjunction with the Open University.Ìý For more information about science at the Open University, click .

At the beginning of July, almost 150 science students gathered for the Open University's Science Summer School at Heriot-Watt University.Ìý For many, this was the first time they had met fellow students.Ìý For almost all, it was the first time they had worked in laboratories with other students.

In the programme, Quentin Cooper talks to the students - about themselves and about the Summer School.Ìý Are they enjoying the experience?Ìý Is it as they imagined it would be?Ìý How was it going into Laboratories for the first time and doing your own experiments?

Traditionally, the Open University attracts students from different backgrounds and with experiences.Ìý Although some students have some prior experience of science, the vast majority are studying science for the first time.Ìý Not only that - for many students, the Summer School will be their first taste of student life, and many will be anxious when they arrive.

Open University tutors will be on hand to help students make the most of the Summer School, and two of them will be joining Quentin for the programme.Ìý Professor Martin Wilkinson is an Activity Tutor who supervises students' academic work.Ìý Allan Leach is a Group Tutor with responsibility for the students' wellbeing.Ìý Together, they will be working to make the Summer School a fulfilling experience for their students, both personally and academically.
