Alchemy or science?
|
Newton's Papers
Isaac Newton is revered for his scientificÌýtheories.ÌýÌýTheology and alchemy are not the subjects that spring to mind when you think ofÌýhis work.Ìý ButÌýNewton wrote a lot about them andÌýtwo pioneering projects are making these texts available to a wide audience.
Dr Rob Iliffe from Imperial CollegeÌýis Editorial Director of the Newton Project, which has put online nearly halfÌýof the two and a half million words he devoted to the subject of theology, as well as a large selection of his personal and scientific papers. Professor Bill Newman from Indiana University is an expert in Newton's alchemical writingsÌýand isÌýpublishing those papersÌýon the internetÌýas 'The Chymistry of Isaac Newton'.Ìý
Fluorescence
The Hayward Gallery's latest exhibition features the work of Dan FlavinÌýwhoÌýused fluorescent light to create works of art.Ìý As an adjunct to the displays, the Hayward has commissioned some scientists to create a series of exhibits to highlight fluorescence and its related cousins - bioluminescence and phosphorescence.
Quentin Cooper is joinedÌýbyÌýProfessor Anthony Campbell,Ìýa medical biochemist at the University of Wales College of Medicine, who patented a bioluminescent jellyfish gene, and Zoe Laughlin, an artist andÌýmaterials scientistÌýfrom King's College London who helped to putÌýtogether the scienceÌýexhibtion atÌýthe Hayward gallery.
