Hydrogen-fuelled bus

Fuel Cells

Hydrogen fuel cells have been promised as the replacement for the internal combustion engine for quite a long time - they were invented in the 1830s.

Now however, in the age of microelectronics we may well see fuel cells in our mobile phones before we use them to power our cars.

Quentin Cooper is joined By Dr David Hart from Imperial College and Dr Shane Slater from renewables consultancy Element Energy to discuss current developments in fuel cell technology.

Psychology of Shopping

Modern day hunter-gathering is done on the high-street. Since the contents of our shopping bags are rarely essential for survival, Material World asks what triggers our urge to shop.

Our purchases help to define us, especially when it comes to fashions. We project our personalities and, like it or not, are judged, by the clothes we wear. Why does clothes shopping give some people thrills and others chills?

Quentin Cooper talks to Baroness Susan Greenfield, neuroscientist and Director of the Royal Institution and Dr Nigel Marlow, lecturer in consumer psychology at London Met university.
