Catch The Pigeon

The humble pigeon is regarded as having a legendary homing ability. In Living World this week, presenter Lionel Kelleway meets scientist Chris Armstrong, who is carrying out research on pigeon navigation at Oxford University’s Wytham Field Station.

Chris is attaching miniature GPS loggers to the pigeons’ backs, to find out how they manage to navigate home to the loft from a familiar location. These small-brained birds have a wide array of navigational tools at their disposal, from a magnetic sense to a sun compass to a keen sense of smell.

Chris’ research is homing in on their use of visual aspects of the landscape to find their way. Although the pigeon is so familiar to us, much of its amazing navigational ability is still to be unravelled.
