Fieldfares in a Winter Orchard
On a very cold and frosty morning, with dawn creeping up over the horizon, Lionel Kelleway joins two bird-ringers in an orchard in Worcestershire as they wait for noisy flocks of fieldfares to arrive.
The windfall from the apple trees are a vital source of food for these very attractive Scandinavian visitors which are a member of the thrush family. The ringers catch the birds in fine mistnets. The birds are carefully removed from the nets and put in small canvas bags before being fitted with a ring and having their vital statistics taken.
But there are always surprises in the natural world and whilst Lionel gets an up close and personal encounter with a fieldfare - a privileged opportunity of a bird in the hand – everyone is stunned when a rather larger avian visitor drops in. |
