A Seven-Spotted Ladybird.

Living World - Hibernating Ladybirds

In theÌýfirst of three programmes dedicated to theÌýÂ鶹ԼÅÄ Spring Watch event, Lionel Kelleway is joined by ladybird experts Mike Majerus and Helen Roy to discover how and where the seven-spot and other ladybirds spend the winter months.

To find some answers they explore Thetford Forest near Cambridge where they find the seven-spot sitting out the winter months amongst the gorse, and other species dotted around the grass tussocks and pine woodland.

The seven-spot is easily identified by its pillar-box red colouring and seven spots.

Many seven-spot ladybirds will fall victim to fungal pathogens and parasitic wasps.

One of it's predators is a newcomer to the British Isles, the harlequin ladybird - an Asian ladybird that has a reputation as a voracious predator that may cause problems for our native species in the future.

Don't forget to record your first sighting of a seven-spot ladybird on theÌýÂ鶹ԼÅÄ Spring Watch website.

In addition to this you can record your sightings of the harlequin ladybird at theÌý website and learn more about theÌýit and other ladybirds.
