Old Red Sandstone
Chris Sperring takes geology scholar and enthusiast Brian Williams back to his homeland of Pembrokeshire, Wales, to re-unite him with his 450 million year old friend. Walking along the Pembrokeshire coast path you arrive pretty quickly at a substantial stretch where the cliffs and pebbles on the beach are terracotta red. These simply stunning rocks come alive when you're guided by Brian Williams.
Williams takes Chris Sperring down gullies which turn out to be old rivers and ponds of millions of years ago filled with ash from the plume of a gigantic volcano that exploded just 100 miles to the west. On the rocks are the fossilised casts of animal burrows, tracks of animals and amazingly trails of dung. Williams and Sperring read the rocks like a natural history book, recreating the life and times of ancient animals who died and left a post card of their life. |
