PROGRAMME INFO
Thursday 21:00-21:30
Leading Edge brings you the latest news from the world of science. Geoff Watts celebrates discoveries as soon as they're being talked about - on the internet, in coffee rooms and bars; often before they're published in journals. And he gets to grips with not just the science, but with the controversies and conversation that surround it.

Deep Impact Sheds Light On Our Early Solar System
Ìý
Surprise findings from NASA’s Deep Impact mission to investigate the structure of comets.

Earlier this summer, the Deep Impact spacecraft released a washing machine-sized projectile into the Comet ‘Tempel 1’, throwing up a huge plume of icy debris.Ìý

By analysing the particles ejected from the comet, astronomers are now starting to piece together how our Solar System formed and how life on earth got started.

Carbon Unlocked From Soils

It’s not just cars, factories and aircraft that are the main culprits of climate change, pumping greenhouse gases into the environment.Ìý

A unique British study shows that soil is also responsible.Ìý And it's likely that climate change is triggering the process.

Far from being a safe storage place for carbon, as scientists had thought, a unique study of soil samples going back 27 years reveals that a staggering 13 million tonnes are lost this way from UK soils each year.ÌýThis off-sets the progress the UK has made in reducing annual carbon dioxide emissions from 1990 to 2002.

What Are Clouds Made Of?

Leading Edge takes to the skies with a plane load of atmospheric scientists to unlock the secrets of cirrus clouds.

The state of the art Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM) aircraft is effectively a climate research lab in the sky.

The water droplets, ice crystals and gas samples they'll collect, are helping scientists discover how these clouds are affecting our climate.

Waterproof Paper

Geoff Watts visits Tuula Teeri at the Royal Institute for Technology in Sweden to see how they are mimicking the natural properties of cellulose in trees, to create water-resistant paper.
