Leading Edge brings you the latest news from the world of science. Geoff Watts celebrates discoveries as soon as they're being talked about - on the internet, in coffee rooms and bars; often before they're published in journals. And he gets to grips with not just the science, but with the controversies and conversation that surround it.

This week on Leading Edge -Ìý redefining the kilogram, selenium bread, youthful blood and foraging humans.

Young blood

As we age, our bodies heal more slowly.

But scientists at Stanford University have now discovered that old tissue can repair as quickly as young tissue when it's serviced by the blood of a younger animal.

Weighing up the kilogram

A precious plum-sized cylinder of metal, locked away in a vault in Paris, is the ultimate arbiter of every weighing scale in the world.

But there's a growing consensus that using this object to define the kilgrogram is inaccurate and a liability.

This week at a meeting at the Royal Society, scientists have been comparing notes to try to come up with a more reliable alternative.

Mineral-enriched foods

Bread made from selenium-enriched wheat goes on sale this week.

Could products like this help to boost mineral levels in the British diet?

How to forage

How do we modern-day foragers, look for lost keys or an item of clothing in a large department store?
Geoff Watts puts his foraging skills to the test and finds out what this reveals about spatial awareness and memory.
