PROGRAMME INFO
Thursday 21:00-21:30
Leading Edge brings you the latest news from the world of science. Geoff Watts celebrates discoveries as soon as they're being talked about - on the internet, in coffee rooms and bars; often before they're published in journals. And he gets to grips with not just the science, but with the controversies and conversation that surround it.

Mission to the Earth's core
'To boldly go where no probe has gone before' is David Stevenson's hope.

Liquid iron alloy
The mission to the Earth’s core involves one hundred million kilogrammes of liquid iron alloy - about one hour of the entire world's iron production.

Micro-instruments
A probe containing highly sophisticated micro-instrumentation will be embedded in the molten iron. It will relay information about its changing surroundings back to the earth's surface.

Fact or science fiction?
With a probe journey time of a week and the estimated cost running to many millions of dollars, is this idea likely to take off, or indeed 'go down'? Geoff Watts investigates.

Also in the programme
The sequencing of a SARS corona virus 'protease' and news on the first biofuel cell tiny enough to be implanted inside the human body.
