Our oil supply is dwindling and transport contributes to nearly a quarter of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, could one solution be to grow our own fuel? For Costing the Earth, Tom Heap investigates whether we can run our cars on a home-grown fuel that can help save the planet.
The USA is streets ahead of Britain when it comes to green fuel. They are poised to be a world leader in a fuel that helps to keep the air clean, cuts global warming gases and provides a new market for hard-pressed farmers – bioethanol.

British farmers are very excited about the potential of finding a substitute for petrol and a new market for their crops. Tom Heap follows a delegation from the National Farmers' Union as they tour the Mid-West, harvesting tips on green energy from their American counterparts.
In the UK, we could make enough bioethanol from our surplus wheat to satisfy nearly 5% of our petrol demand. Costing the Earth asks whether this fuel is really a green solution to a global problem.
