The Bird Boys

In the year that has seen celebrations of the 50th anniversary of ospreys returning to nest in Scotland at the now famous Loch Garten site, this is the previously untold story of what happened in the years preceding the ospreys' celebrity. Talking to eye witnesses, nature writer, Jim Crumley, pieces together a picture of isolated rural Scotland in the 1950's and the diverse lives that met around the ospreys. Egg collectors, crofters, lairds and the self-styled Bird Boys came together amidst post-war military secrecy, cloak-and-dagger glamour, passionate concern for the birds, and the struggle of a poaching and crofting life.

A curious and unexpected tale that also suggests that ospreys were never extinct in the first place!
