Claudia Hammond
Claudia Hammond looks at the impact of detention on asylum seekers.
The No Place for a Child campaign, launched a fortnight ago by Save the Children, the Refugee Council, and Bail for Immigration Detainees, has highlighted the plight of children in detention within the British asylum process. But the mental health implications of detention also apply to adults within the system.ÌýClaudia HammondÌýdiscusses the mental health impact of detention on asylum seekers with Dr Zachary Steel, one of the authors of an Australian research paper that found detention, and living on a temporary visa, had an adverse effect on the mental health of asylum seekers.ÌýShe alsoÌýtalks to Tony McNulty, Immigrations Minister, about whether this research has any bearing on our own detention system. PlusÌýDr Christina Pourgourides, consultant psychiatrist, and part of the H M Prisons Inspectorate 2002-3 whose own research has highlighted similar concerns, talks to Claudia about her impressions of the impact of our asylum process on detainees.

Also on this weeks programme, Gaze Aversion.Researchers at Stirling University have been teaching 5 year olds to look away from the face of the questioner when answering questions. Adults and older children do this naturally, but does it actually help you get the answer right? This research proved it did. Something for parents to try at home too.

Claudia Hammond also discusses what role social psychologists have in shaping the world we live in. Professor Miles Hewstone specialises in the area of reducing intergroup conflict, and talks with Claudia about how successful social psychology has been in getting its message across historically, and how this might change.
