Brain Scan

Oliver James

In the first of the new series, Dr Raj Persaud meets clinical psychologist, Oliver James, whose groundbreaking book, out this week, turns the spotlight on the family.

Following his success with Britain on the Couch James now turns his attention to the nature/nurture debate, and demonstrates that who we are is largely the result of the way we were cared for during our first six years, rather than our genes and other environmental factors.

It's these early experiences which influence our choices of friends and lovers, define our interests and professional drives, and make us more or less prone to mental illness.

But James believes that we do have the power to re-write the script of our family drama, once we fully understand what went on.

Feature: Tune Deafness

Claudia Hammond talks to the people for whom music means nothing and looks at new research on the phenomenon of tune deafness from Newcastle University. She discovers that some people seem to process sounds differently in the brain which makes it hard for them to tell notes apart or to recognise the emotion in a tune. For some people music sounds like nothing but an irritating noise.

Can you help?

Volunteers needed! If you live within easy reach of Newcastle and you think you might be a suitable subject for their research, call the helpline 0800 044 044 or write to: Tim Griffiths, Consultant Neurologist, Regional Neurosciences Centre, Newcastle General Hospital, Westgate Road, Newcastle NE4 6BE

Mental Health Bill

The Government published a draft Mental Health Bill in June 2002. The draft is for consultation and responses had to be in by 16 September. All in the Mind hears from a mental health service user and a mental health service provider with their views on how the proposed changes would affect them.
