Schizophrenia

Dr Raj Persaud examines a condition which will affect one in a hundred people during their lifetime. Debunking the myths (schizophrenics do not have a split personality) and assessing the latest treatments (25% of sufferers will recover fully) the programme explores the mental health problem which most commonly affects those in their teens and 20s, hearing from sufferers, their families, and those who treat them.

Studio guests:
Tim Kendall, Deputy Director of Royal College of Psychiatrists, heading the new National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health in charge of issuing new guidelines for treatment of Schizophrena, Cliff Prior of The National Schizophrenia Fellowship, Peter Chadwick, psychologist and author of Schizophrenia: A Positive Perspective (Published by Routledge)

Feature: Twins Study
New research from the Institute of Psychiatry in London looking at why one twin can develop schizophrenia and not the other.

Can you help? The researchers are very keen to find twins between the ages of 21 and 60 where one or both twins has schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. They can be identical or non-identical. They are also looking for adult twins without the conditions. Taking part involves questionnaires, tasks and a scan. Email Dr Marco Picchioni: m.picchioni@iop.kcl.ac.uk. Or call his secretary on 0207 848 0355.

Interview:
Til Wykes, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Psychiatriatric Rehabilitation at the Institute of Psychiatry about her new research into the use of Cognitive Remediation Therapy in the treatment of the cognitive problems associated with Schizophrenia.

Living with Schizophrenia: Carole Buckingham talks about her experience.

If you have a question about Schizophrenia send it to All in the Mind, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Broadcasting House, Room 734, London W1A 1AA and it may be put to a panel of experts in the final programme of the series.
