Snake Woman

When Veronica Gibbons moved into her new flat, her 5 foot pet boa constrictor impressed the neighbours...

"We were moving from a shared house into a flat. I had a boa constrictor at the time, and the last thing to be moved was the snake's cage, because he had to be kept warm. It was October, a chilly day. So while my husband and eldest son took the tank to bits, I took the baby in the buggy and stuffed the boa constrictor inside the front of my boiler suit to keep it warm. He was quite a docile snake. I'm quite a big build, so there's a nice little space here above my waist for him to sort of cuddle up in."

He did get a bit active in the butchers, I think he could smell the meat and started to move about a bit. I went home, and this guy came down the stairs with his hand out, very distinguished, tall, with silver hair, and said welcome to Ashgrove Court, and shook me by the hand said 'I'm your upstairs neighbour, it's nice to see a new young family move in here...'

At this point I could feel Fang sliding down my left leg, head first. I just went rigid, I was hoping that if I stayed still he'd stop. But he didn't - he was at my ankle bone. I said to my new neighbour, 'You're going to think this is extremely strange, but I've got a boa constrictor in my trousers and he's about to escape through the bottom.' So he let go of my hand and I put my hand in the front of the boiler suit and started hauling Fang up by the tail, which he didn't like of course, so he was wriggling trying to get away..." My neighbour was very laid back about it considering that it was an unusual situation and he knew Fang was going to be living beneath him!

Fang died a couple of years after we moved. My husband threatened to divorce me if I got another snake. It wasn't the snake it was the fact that I was having to breed mice to feed him on which caused the problem. and the mice used to escape... so I've got a Leopard Gecko now and a Tiger Salamander
