How Not To Propose

Ash Logan gets down on bended knee ... painfully

I suppose it is fairly strange to find yourself standing on Waterloo Bridge in the middle of February holding a half bottle of champagne, while tentatively getting down on one knee, then two, ‘cos it’s more comfortable…

I literally spent months starting to ask my girlfriend the question, "Will you marry me?". On one occasion it became "Will you make me a cup of tea?" An odd request as we were thirty thousand feet above the Atlantic on the way to New York at the time.

But having cleared it with my ex-flatmate, my dad and the astrologist on the Arsenal website, I decided to go for it.

"What the hell are you doing?" came her reaction
"Will you marry me?"
"Are you serious?"
"Yes, I’m serious. What’s your answer? My knees are killing me."

"No"
"I’m sorry?"
"No" She started crying and told me that it was too soon. Too soon? What’s that about? I’d been thinking about this for months… She smiled and I smiled back. I felt relieved - I’d done what I thought I’d never do. The boys would be proud. The girls? I don’t know.

Have you ever tried to ask a loved-one an important question?
Where did you choose to ask it, and how was your proposition received?
How did you prepare for the big moment?
