Procrastination

Michele Hanson's an expert in delaying tactics ...

The trouble with time is that the more you have, the more you waste. At least I do. I tend to procrastinate. There is only me to motivate me when I'm working at home on my own. And there are so many things I need to do first: walk the dog, have breakfast, make a few phone calls, give mother her breakfast, and she'll be watching Kilroy and I can't just dump her breakfast and buzz off, so I need to watch a little Kilroy ...

It's very difficult to move forwards. Sometimes, you even move backwards, like my friend Brian. There are so many other things to do first that need to be done before he can do the things that come before the thing that needs doing. Last year he really needed to sell his Harley Davidson motorbike because he desperately needs some money. But for some reason he'd taken it to pieces in 1968 and left them in his friend's Janet's garage. But to do it up properly, he needed to have the forks chromed. Then he could get Β£5,000 for it - he could not have had the forks chromed, put the bike together and still got Β£3,000 for it, but he didn't want to, because if he was going to do something, he wanted to do it properly. He's a bit of a perfectionist, so he left it in pieces.

Janet likes to get things done and out the way, even if they aren't absolutely perfect, so she rather rashly asked Brian to help her with her tiling, then he could earn some money and then he could have the forks straightened and MEND HIS BIKE. Just as Brian was about to start the tiling, his girlfriend rang from Italy and she was in a bit of a state so he had to go off and see her for a fortnight and sort things out, because the girlfriend had upset him and he can't work properly when he's upset.

So Janet had to have a quick scream, do the tiling herself and not pay Brian who then couldn't mend his bike, although at least his girlfriend felt better ...
