Irritating Noises

Sherie Trotter-Johnson from Northumberland emailed us about the noises that just about take her to the edge ...

"My main reason for mailing is to respond to the *question of irritating every-day noises. Easy-peasy. I cannot abide anything repetitive (loud clock ticking being the most obvious example) or 'wet' voices. I get very disgruntled at people who don't clear their mouths of excess spit before speaking. I frequently have to turn off the radio and miss part of a particularly interesting interview or some such thing because every other word is squelchy and there's too much half-swallowing going on. Yeuch yeuch yeuch.

But the worst thing of all combines the two: Baby Maggie from The Simpsons cartoon. I quite like the programme but can't watch - for days afterwards I have that "suck-suck" noise that she does stuck in my head. It's like water-torture waiting for the next one - in fact even thinking about it makes me feel queasy.

My boyfriend, John, finds this highly amusing. He doesn't seem to suffer from "suck-sensitivity" at all. Surely I can't be the only one? He also chuckles when I make him put his alarm clock inside the wardrobe because I can't sleep with ticking. I can't read or concentrate to write or do anything really with a ticky clock about. My best friend on the other hand, finds ticking soothing and has several clocks about her bedroom to help her sleep. She's got to be in a minority, right? Surely I can't be the odd one?
