Gene Trap

One of Louise Rennison's friends has just had a scan and as a result of seeing her baby for the first time, has had to rethink its name: firstly, because it's a girl and secondly because it's got a big nose. This set Louise thinking about the ad hoc nature and general unfairness of inheritance.

Louise remembered walking home from school one day, in Leeds, when ...

"... I was stopped by some big rough lads. The leader said, 'Hey, lads - look at the snout on that! I didn't know The Who were in town but, hey look, here's Pete Townsend in a frock'. Pete Townsend in a frock - that was me - because of my nose, or rather my dad's nose. Then someone said to me the other day, 'Oh you've got your mum's smile'. Is nothing mine?"

Now she's had her hair cut, she's discovered she also has Uncle Arthur's ears. Can it get any worse?
