The Love Bug

Michelle Hanson throws a spanner in the works ...

I am buying a new car. My old one keeps going wrong, probably because I haven't looked after it properly or had it serviced regularly or because this type of car has an exhaust fault and is an odd make from Korea. And when I open the bonnet and look at an engine I usually break into a cold sweat and call for help. What is going on in there? How does this thing work? I don't know because I am a girly.

And another thing, I've never bought a car before. How? What sort? They all look the same, like jelly moulds, and I don't really fancy any of them. And they all cost an arm and a leg and everyone has a different opinion about every type.

I don't care. I've found an old brown Saab and I'm going to buy it. I like the shape, I like the way the windows go up and down, I've put a deposit on it and come home in a state of shock. Then I run round telling my my friends. They all go a bit quiet. "I hope you're getting the AA to check it, "says my neighbour Jennifer strictly. No I haven't. Some are even more suspicious, "How many miles on the clock?" they snap. "How many miles per gallon? Can it take lead free? Is there a service history?"

Don't know. Can't answer any of the questions. I forgot to ask half of them and I can't remember the answers to the ones I did ask because I didn't really understand the answers anyway. Don't know what a carburettor does, but I like the man selling the car because his chief mechanic has two Boxer dogs and I have one and there's lots of room for a lovely big dog's bed in the back, so as far as I'm concerned, this car is a must.

It was love at first sight. But will it last?

What happened when you bought something new?
Was it love at first sight?
And just how useful was the advice of friends and family?
