When I was 11 years old (ie. 1971, but don`t spread it), my parents redecorated my bedroom so that it would look "grown up", eg. a desk, a David Cassidy poster and lots of purple which was very fashionable at the time. My favourite feature was the pull cord which opened up my (purple) curtains.
My Dad always woke me in time to get ready for school, and on the first morning, he pulled the cord, opening the curtains with a flourish and said "I now declare this bedroom open!" He had the sort of serious expression of a mayor opening a new town hall, and I though it was extremely funny.
The problem was that he carried on doing exactly the same for the next eight years.
Can you remember being 16, `O` Level exams looming, not wanting to get up on a Monday morning? Dad would breeze in and "declare my bedroom open". Even on the weekend, the same ceremony would take place, only about an hour later. I used to dread the sound of this cheery greeting and try to ignore him.
Then in 1978, I left home to begin training as a nurse. I lived in the nurses residence, and had such a good time that I rarely felt homesick. I was extremely surprised to discover that the one thing I really missed was Dad "declaring my bedroom open" every morning. What had for so long been so annoying because of it`s predictability, was now something I really missed.
My Dad listens to Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Truths every week, so could you tell him I apologise for the mornings I was so miserable (1971-1978)?
