That Angling Urge

The Newton family fish together, and have done so for over 40 years. Three generations sit on the banks of the Droitwich canal and talk about their love of fishing.

Grandad (Graham Newton)

"This bay is a good holding bay for Bream".

Fishing's my hobby - always has been ... taught to me by my father he brought the angling urge into my life. I'm afraid I have two sons and one grandson who are also fishing mad...
It's lovely to think when I die my hobby is going to carry on. A lot of lads when they get to 15 or 16 they discover girls, and lose interest in the angling ... I don't think that'll happen with my grandson.
There's more to fishing than catching fish - you've had a day out, you've seen the birds and wildlife.
There's lot's of mickey taking - especially if the son beats the father, if he catches more fish."

Dad (Chris Newton)

I was 8 or 9 when I first went fishing with my Dad - he used break off an old willow branch and connect me some line and a float and we used to fish down the side of the rocks on the River Severn... and I was hooked for life. My son Sam is 11 now, and he hasn't missed a weekend's fishing in the last four years - and he's a very good fisherman. It's nice to have someone to go fishing with, and when it's your son it's very special."

Son (Sam Newton)

"You gotta know how to feed and present your bait to the fish - if you can do that right you can catch some fish. I like spotting the birds ... robins and that land on your rod...
If you're not getting the bites you just gotta keep feeding and hope - it's no good if you start walking to the bank.
Computer games are simple, whereas fishing - there's more to it. You learn from your parents - whereas your parents aren't interested in computer games."
