Nose

Mussolini's Nose

Listen to the item

Almost exactly eighty years ago, at half past nine in the morning, Italian time, Charlie Gibson's Auntie Violet shot Mussolini through the nose. The bullet went clean through both nostrils shortly after he'd given a speech on the wonders of modern medicine. It was even reported inΒ The Times (seeΒ link below).

Auntie Violet was actually Charlie's great aunt - or maybe great great aunt and she was the daughter of Lord Ashbourne the one time Lord Chancellor of Ireland and the sister of Willie, known as Mad Uncle Willie. It's a challenging ancestry - quite something to live up to - which where the conversation started when David talked to Charlie.
