Penguin Pals

Listen to the interviewΜύListen Again

Amanda Lynnes knows a thing or two about the gentoo penguin. She's developed a special relationship with them whilst working for the British Antarctic Survey on the tiny island of Goodyear...

Amanda and 'furry coated man'

Amanda has been stationed on Goodyear Island for the last four months. Her only other companion (apart from the penguins of course) is another scientist, Peter. To go off and study the penguins, Amanda had to leave her husband at home. Although she misses him, she says, they make the most of their time together.

Boot-brush boy

She's now spending time with her "furry coated men". The penguins, mostly chicks, are curious about everything. Amanda says, "They look like you'd want to cuddle them because they are fluffy, but actually they're proper little predators".

Amanda believes the penguins have their own personalities. There is one particular chick she calls "the boot-brush boy" because he likes to lie on the base's prickly doormat. She's also a fan of their smell which reminds her of Barbour jackets!

Amanda is on her way home soon and she's going to miss the chicks horribly. Nevermind, this will be counter-balanced by the joy of seeing her husband again.
