Richard Uridge goes on a search for the elusive Pine Marten in the forests around Lake Vyrnwy.
As he travels he learns of the forest's connection with the historical Welsh fighter for Independence, , who used the forests of mid-Wales to hide his guerrilla army. Richard travels the forest in the (or carriage in his case) and discovers that the Vyrnwy forest lays claim to the in Wales - a Douglas Pine which stretches 62m high. The Douglas Pines play host to a variety of woodland creatures, including the flamboyant - which Richard discovers is almost as elusive as the .
