Made
for Two

 Most
couples about to be married face the question of what reading to have
at their wedding. How about 1 Corinthians 13 ("faith, hope and love"),
or on a more humanist track an extract from The Prophet by Kalil Gibram,
perhaps? Or maybe something from The Archers...?
That's
what Johanna King and Stewart Hinsley chose for their recent wedding,
and bizarre though it may seem, the extract they chose is surprisingly
apt.
It
wasn't the only unusual thing about the service, at St Gwyddelan's Church
in Dolwyddelan, near Bangor, which combined elements of Quaker procedure
with a conventional Church of Wales ceremony.
After
the vows, the bride and groom's friends Daniel Doncaster and Maggie Griffiths
stood one behind the other and performed this (slightly amended) scene,
which was written by Adrian Flynn and broadcast by Nigel and Elizabeth
Pargetter on 8 June this year:

yes... Though it takes some getting used to... being back here. |

Now,
then.. IsnÂ’t that a marvellous view? |

Actually
all I can see is the back of your neck. |

ItÂ’s
just like marriage really, isnÂ’t it? |
| ELIZ

You
mean seeing the back of your neck? |

No,
I mean tandem-riding and marriageÂ… both rely on teamwork and
good communication. |

(STRUGGLING)
Yes. |
| NIGEL |
And
of course, having clearly defined roles. Captain in front, stoker
behind. |

(STRUGGLING)
Well, itÂ’s certainly good exercise, but I wouldnÂ’t mind
a go up front some time. |

Right
then, Lizzie, we just have to battle up this hill, before it all
becomes plain sailing. And thatÂ’s just like marriage as well,
isnÂ’t it? Sometimes it can be a real uphill struggle.

Oh, yes. |

And
thatÂ’s when you have to redouble your efforts an work even harder
together. |

Yes.. Or we could just get off.. and walk for a stretch. |
It
need hardly be said that Jo and Stewart are keen cyclists and long-time
Archers listeners. And - probably fortunately - so was their vicar, Cathy
Jones!
