Mothering Sunday Duty
by Vicky S

invitationsDid you notice that Caroline seemed much more enthusiastic about Mothering Sunday as a hotelier than as a daughter? Vicky S did, and posted this conversation to the Fantasy Archers topic of .

[phone rings]

"Hello?"

"Hello, Mummy. It's me!"

"Who?"

"Me, Mummy. Caroline."

"Carol Anne? I'm sorry. I think you have the wro-"

[nervous laugh] "No silly. CAROLINE . Your daughter!"

"Oh' [pause] "Caroline. How very lovely. Lovely to hear from you."

"Yes. Lovely to speak to you too Mummy. It's been, well, it's been rather a long time really. How are you?"

"Perfectly well thank you." [pause] "And you?"'

"Fine, Mummy, absolutely fine. Busy of course, working awfully hard. Though, speaking of work, there's a bit of exciting news I need to tell you - "

"Oh, you're still working are you? Well, I do hope you've moved on from slaving for that boring man in the grubby little hotel with the pretentious French menu."

"Well actually Mummy ..."

"I'm surprised that darling Guy puts up with you wasting your time there. Can't be much fun for him, poor love, having to dine alone every evening while you're at the beck and call of every jumped up Birmingham car salesmen with a company credit card."

"Guy, Mummy ...?"

"Oh dear. How ghastly. Have I done it again? Sorry. I just can't keep up with your private life Caroline. How very ... unfortunate. Poor Guy, such a dear, charming man, wonderful manners. Though of course, he was far too old for you, I always said that."

"Yes, Mummy. I know. I'm, well I'm sort of living with Oliver Sterling now, you remember Oliver, don't you?"

"Well of course I do. I may be getting on Caroline, but I'm certainly not senile. I remember him perfectly. The MFH. I met his wife you know, several times. Absolutely charming woman, delightfully witty, the most disastrous cook I've ever met but somehow turned every horrendous meal into the most amusing story. Hilarious. Wonderful mother of course, their children are an absolute credit to her. So very sad really. But these things happen, don't they. So, anyway Caroline, I'm afraid I've got to rush you. I've got a luncheon arrangement at the Club, and I'm running the slightest bit late. Was there something you wanted?"

"Just to tell you ... no, that is, well just to wish you a Happy Mothering Sunday really. I've sent you some flowers, they're on the way, but I do apologise, they won't get to you until tomorrow, I just didn't have a moment to get them organised, what with - "

"Tomorrow? Oh, what a shame. I'm going to Nice with Binty and Charles for a week, leaving first thing. Never mind, I'll leave a note for Mrs T to take them home with her. Bless her, she loves flowers, and she's a total whizz with roses. Caroline, it's been so lovely to chat. Do give my love to erm ... Oliver, and give old Midnight a pat and a carrot from me too. Oh, there's my taxi! Must fly. Goodbye."
