Fifty Years On?
by Misty

bedThe anniversary of that famous episode was marked on the Fantasy Archers topic of The Archers message board.

Phil turned sleepily over in bed and smiled at the sound of the shower coming from the compact en-suite in the corner. How glad he was that he and Jill had invested in that little luxury, shortly after moving into Glebe Cottage. His gaze turned to the bed itself and he smiled again. That had been another special purchase which he and Jill had made - and the bed was so comfortable, he invariably fell asleep as soon as his head touched the pillow.

"Come on, Jill," he called in the direction of the shower-room, "you must be clean by now!" He smoothed the pillow on Jill's side of the bed. The shower stopped, and a towel-clad figure emerged. ""And who, may I ask, is Jill?", came the voice from the towel.

Phil shot straight upright in bed. "Huh? What!" he exclaimed. The figure stopped drying her hair and began to get into bed beside Phil. Phil felt his eyes bulging. "G-g-g-g-grace?" he managed to croak. "Well who were you expecting, darling?" replied the person in his bed. She pulled some of the bedclothes over to her side, and began to get comfortable. "You still haven't told me who Jill is - not a long-lost girlfriend?" Grace laughed a beautiful tinkling laugh, which Phil remembered, even after 50 years.

"Jill is my wife!" replied Phil. "We have four children and" - he counted on his fingers - "and seven grandchildren! I mean, I don't know where you've been all these years. I thought - I thought - I mean ..." Grace gently stroked his brow. "You'll have to be more careful what you have for supper," she murmured.

"But what about the children?" asked Phil, getting more agitated. Grace stroked his shoulder. "You know about the children, darling" she exclaimed. "You can't have forgotten about them. Our son Rupert and his wife Catherine are running Brookfield. It's in very safe hands, especially with their five sons all helping!" But Phil still wasn't happy. "But what about the others?" he cried."Shhh, darling!" said Grace. "Surely you remember that our daughter Amanda married Lord Whatisname and lives in Surrey. They have four beautiful daughters!"

"But Grace," continued Phil, "if this is all true, what about Kenton and Shula and David and Elizabeth and their families?" Grace put her arms around him. "All a dream, darling," she said, soothingly, "all a dream."
