Venue: The Fishpond Music: World fusion / blues / folk Location: South Parade, Matlock Baths, Derbyshire Tel: 01629 581 000 Reviewer: Steve Yates
ÌýÌýListen (4'28) to 'The Limit / Capella / Spanish (Smith)' performed by Prego (RoMoe Records RME CD 007 1997)
You'll find the Fishpond at the southern end of the Parade in Matlock Bath, a Victorian spa town where the sea went out and never came back. From the outside the Fishpond looks like any other pub catering for the hordes of bikers and day-trippers visiting Matlock Bath. Come inside and you'll find anything from a mad jam-session led by Ian on his Highland battle pipes, a soulful, jazz trumpet solo from 'The Rat' or a Flamenco peña.
In the late1990s, new management keen to promote live music began to realise the potential of the Fishpond as a music venue. It opens its doors to the rich mixture of musical talent to be found in the area at least three times a week with gigs in the bar or larger events in the 200 capacity ballroom.
This is not a single genre venue, the programme can range from rock through blues to folk in the space of a week. Recent performances at the Fishpond have included the Reggae beats of Tee and Latouche (ex E2k), the poetic genius of John Cooper Clark and a memorable appearance from Half man Half Biscuit.
Coverage of folk, roots and world music has increased recently. Artists have included the Breton band Gwelloch and the international Boka Halat with members from Gambia, India, Senegal and the UK. The coming months will see appearances from Martin Simpson, winner of the Radio 2 Folk Awards Best Album of Year, Jimi McRae, Hendrix on bagpipes and Prego the well known national festival band.
If you want to do more than just listen come on a Sunday night, bring an instrument and take part in John Gills' weekly acoustic session - a mixture of fun and music for regulars, locals and visitors.
The Fishpond is also a musical centre for the community. Regular Breton, French and Scandinavian dance workshops are held and it is home to the 30 strong Fishpond choir.
