All FM is a bit cheesy and totally uncool but is building up a loyal fan base in the area. It serves a poor, inner city area that's so grim we are being "Urban Renewed". There are many different nationalities / cultures catered for and it uses music to unite. We have a terrible gun / violence problem and music is used to challenge this culture. The Iguana Bar has free live world music every Sunday as well as good continental lager and bar snacks late into the evening. The atmosphere is relaxed and the crowd is equally good at dancing as it is at listening. You can expect to bump into any age group in there which is what makes the venue so special. In fact the punters are as eclectic as the music which runs from 9-11.30 pm ( the bar has a late license).
Recent acts have included Cajun, Irish, Turkish, Egyptian and flamenco. You need to arrive early if you want a seat for popular acts like the Paula Darwish Country and Eastern Band (Turkish, Kurdish & English fusion ) or the Nile Band (Arabic pop).
If you are lucky you will catch a brilliant performance from bar owner and bouziki maestro Pascal Pascalis who often joins in the live music. You will forget you have to go to work the next day and imagine yourself a million miles away from the rainy night outside. You can check out the listings on the Iguana website . (Alex Huseyni)
