Where I Play:
One weekend we might be at the Kirkmichael Guitar Festival, another weekend, we'll be in a small bar somewhere up in the highlands, or we play some of the folk festivals round Scotland. We play anywhere that we think we're going to be appreciated and enjoyed. We're not really in this for money. We're in it for the fun element of getting round different places, and seeing how people react to what we do.
Small festivals are great. One of the best places we ever played was the Shetland Folk Festival, which was an event and a half. You must play about 20 gigs through the week, plus they've got sessions at night where you interact with all the musicians who really want to hear you play and want to play with you. It's fabulous, it's like heaven!
If there's a party going on, we're usually the last ones to put our guitars down. It's important in learning songs because new ideas can come up from those spontaneous sessions. Music doesn't come out of a vacuum, it comes out of a conglomeration of different things like rhythms and ideas that must be passed around - you cannot stay isolated in what you do.
