Radio 3 Guide to World Music

These guides have been produced in conjunction with The Rough Guide to World Music, the most popular reference guide to music around the globe.

For each country our experts have selected ten tracks to reflect the diversity and history of the music. Listen to the whole programme, or click on an individual track to hear the music clip and the story behind it.

If our ten tracks whet your appetite, click through to read the full discography provided by the Rough Guide.

Begin your journey in Haiti, Mali, Romania or Venezuela. Then head to South Africa with Andy Kershaw, or travel northward to Finland with Fiona Talkington.

Although Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere it is still rich in one thing - music. Andy Kershaw, who 'can't seem to keep away from Haiti', tells the stories behind the music. Hear the suave and subtle 'compas direct' and 'mini jazz' bands of the 'belle epoch', the shanty town rappers and vodou punks.
Mali
Mali is a musical powerhouse, producing some of the great superstars of African music. Lucy Duran spent years researching the songs of its powerful female griots, and working with musicians like the brilliant kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate. Prepare yourself for a musical feast.
