The Indigo Girls blasted onto the contemporary folk scene in 1989 with this joyous piece of guitar driven folk-pop. The vocals - both individually and harmoniously - are superb, and the blending of the two are sublime. Taken from their self-titled debut album, this track also features Irish band Hothouse Flowers, and is a wonderful upbeat start to a career which has seen the Girls just release their 11th album. A truly deserving recipient of a Sold On Song placing!

Simple, honest, and beautifully sung; although they've been more ambitious, they've never scaled these heights.

Gill in Newcastle
Fantastic writing talent and excellent harmonies.

the power of two has seen me through some of the toughest times in my life thanks

This is such a wise song but devilishly up beat with it. It makes me feel good about life, gives me a lift on bad days and reminds me not to take the wee troubles which surround us too seriously, as there are more important things to be dealing with. On top of that its beautifully and simply sung. Its great to see it in this list!

Ben Eaton, Stourport-on-Severn
A fine moment in music and certainly a favourite, but to call it their best would ignore the huge (and it is big!) amount of music this remarkable duo have produced over the years. I don't know that I could pick a favourite but Closer to fine would be among them, along with Watershed, Galileo, Faye Tucker, The Wood Song...there's just too many!

Lindsay, New York City
This is far from the best Indigo Girls song out there. And I don't mean that it's a bad song. I mean that in the collection of increasingly brilliant material that characterizes their career thus far, "Closer to Fine" was only the beginning -- and to see a beginning song get this kind of recognition is wonderful indeed. The song provides some nice insight into what listeners can expect from the Girls' material: lyrics that are earnest yet playful, music that's catchy yet utterly unique, and voices that blend together just as well as they stand alone. But don't fall too easily into the trap of believing that the Girls are all about guitar-strumming and pretty harmonies; once you move past "Closer to Fine" and into songs like "Go" or "Cut it Out," you may be surprised at just how edgy these folk rockers can get.

This is by far one of my favourite songs. I am so glad it made it into the top 100!
