Bahati is a celebrity in Kenya. He made his name as a gospel singer, and now has his own reality TV show and harbours ambitions to conquer the world as an Afrobeats artist.

His story is one of luck, talent and personal charm and determination. He grew up in the Nairobi slum of Mathare, lost his mother at the age of six, and survived by collecting scrap metal on the streets, until he entered a children's home.

He approached countless people and eventually persuaded someone to help him record his first song. Fast forward to 2015 and that person's goodwill is paid off: Bahati wins an Afrima award for best Gospel artist. He now has more than a million subscribers on YouTube, and even wanted to run for political office to represent the Mathare constituency.
