Africa’s Covid-19 vaccination question
South African research is ongoing to assess whether the Oxford vaccine will prevent severe illness. Currently the vaccine is set to be used as part of the COVAX initiative.
The Oxford vaccine is ideal for African countries due to its cheap cost and simple refrigeration needs, but research from South Africa questioned its effectiveness against a new virus variant found in the country. However, the World Health Organisation still recommends the use of the Oxford vaccine and more studies are ongoing to assess its effectiveness against severe disease. Rhoda Odhiambo chats to Priscilla Ngethe about the vital role vaccines play in public health and how important it will be or people to receive their vaccine properly, from a healthcare facility.
